What sports to do in the autumn? Via ferrata!

When asked “what sport should I try?”, I usually advise choosing an activity you enjoy and that replenishes both your body and mind. That’s why I’d like to recommend an activity that has recently become my passion and which I believe is best suited for autumn and spring.

“Via ferrata” is an Italian term that translates to “ironed routes.” It refers to a mountain route, typically in a scenic, rocky area, that is equipped with ladders, steps, bridges, and wire ropes, allowing you to traverse it safely.

With your climbing harness and energy-absorbing lanyard, you can be confident in your safety. The energy absorber is designed to protect you from falling if you slip. It is equipped with two carabiners because between two hangings one of them must always be attached to the fixed wire rope. As a beginner, it’s a good idea to bring a 60-80 cm resting bridle with carabiner (also known as a climbing looper), which will help you rest comfortably and safely on the route. While moving, this should not be attached. Most locations offer equipment rentals, and it’s recommended to inquire in advance. A climbing helmet is a mandatory piece of gear, and climbing gloves are also helpful. For footwear, I recommend hiking shoes or boots, ensuring the soles don’t slip. For more information on equipment, you can visit: viaferratainfo.hu/felszereles/.

In recent years, several via ferrata routes have been built in Hungary, many of which are free to use. For a first try, I recommend the routes in Tata and Tatabánya, as they feature relatively easy sections for beginners.

You can find more locations and details about the terrain (e.g., the number of routes, their length and difficulty, availability of rental equipment, etc.) at the following sites: termeszetjaro.hu/viaferrata/ and csodahelyek.hu.

The difficulty of the routes is marked from A to F, with A being the easiest and F recommended for experienced climbers only. Start with the A, B, and C routes for guaranteed fun and a sense of achievement. It’s advisable to go with two or more people, both for the excitement and motivation and to help each other out.

Who would I recommend this to? Women who enjoy unique natural locations, have basic physical fitness, aren’t afraid of heights, and want to experience the flow state.

Adventure awaits!
