UEFA Women’s European Championship 2025

The 2025 UEFA Women’s EURO competition is underway in Switzerland. For those who haven’t followed women’s football for long, let me tell you, the game has changed. Gone are the days of the superpowers like Germany or the United States beating teams 6-0 in group stage matches. More and more countries are making investments to include women and girls in sports. We are seeing the fruits of this in exciting matches!

In Hungary, M4 Sport is broadcasting the games. You may want to watch on mute because the male commentators can be a bit annoying, but sometimes humorous. Like in the opening match the commentator explained, “For those of you who haven’t watched women’s football before, if a player stays on the ground, she really is injured. Not like in the men’s game where they just pretend all the time.” You won’t see much acting, but you will see top-notch, inspiring athletes fighting for gold.

Who to watch?

England

Coming off a stunning performance at the last World Cup which led them to a heartbreaking loss in the final, England has a strong team. Several of the roster were part of the Arsenal squad that won the Women’s Champions League this year, including Michelle Agyemang, Chloe Kelly, Beth Meade, Alessia Russo, Leah Williamson, and Lotte Wubben May. Already in the tournament couple Beth Mead (England) and Vivianne Miedema (Netherlands) have faced off

Spain

Who can forget the infamous kiss scandal after the last World Cup win ? Despite all the negative attention, the team has managed to keep their eye on the prize. We may well be witnessing a golden age in the Spanish women’s national team reminiscent of the men’s team that won three consecutive international competitions. Honestly, there are too many lesbian and bisexual footballers on this squad for me to list them all. Trip to Spain, anyone?

Norway

This team is a bit of a dark horse. Admittedly, they have not played well in the runup to the Euro Championship, but if they get their act together they could surprise us all. The squad has star power with forwards Ada Hegeberg ( Ballon d’or winner ) and Graham Hausen. So far, they have won their group stage games. I think they are just warming up, get ready for the fireworks. There are several members of the LGBT community on the team, but also keep your eyes out for the allies . Ada is not only a great player, but also an activist who has stood up in her career for women’s equality ( famously sitting out of the national team squad in protest of unequal conditions) and the LGBTQT ( especially after the Oslo terror attacks).

Watch a game and see what these women can do. You may even see a few players from our team or witness the next iconic lesbian kiss as partners meet on the pitch.
