Queer Con: a safe meeting space for the community

In October, Háttér Társaság (Background Society) is staging Queer Con for the second time – it’s a special event primarily aimed at queer youth, where everything revolves around self-expression, community, and safe recreation.

This year’s meeting will take place on October 11th from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Turbina, a popular nightclub in Budapest. The programs include groundbreaking lectures and workshops without taboos, covering topics such as queer sex education, feminism, marginalized groups within the community, and a brief history of the Hungarian LGBTQI movement. A mental health workshop will be held in English and there will be a legal obstacle course on legal issues affecting queer youth.

Besides the serious topics of course there will also be entertainment, including ballroom dancing classes courtesy of Charme Hungary Dance Club, drag shows and performances, board games from Transvanilla Association, and what most people are looking forward to: a vogue show! The evening will end with queer karaoke, and throughout the day, you can get tattoos and teeth-jewellery made, do crafts, check out civil society organizations and the creations of the one-year-old Queer Creative Club, and get free HIV/STI testing almost all day long.

The program’s mission is to make the diversity of the queer community visible and tangible, while offering young people opportunities for safe entertainment, learning, and community building. With this event, Background Society aims to take a stand against the discrimination affecting LGBTQI people and promote their social inclusion and mental well-being.

Queer Con is not just an event, but a meeting point: a safe and vibrant space where the young queer generation can experience and understand that they are not alone.

The program is open to the press, but journalists must register in advance.
